My First Pieced Quilt *Sort of.

I finished my first quilt just in time for the day after Mother's Day. Unfortunately it is my mom's Mother's Day present.  Sorry Mom. I promise it will be worth it. The pattern is from here (except the spring issue.) The fabrics are from various stores, but all are either white polka dots on single color background or single color polka dots on white background, eighteen different fabrics if you count the binding. (You can look here for a close-up of the top.) The back is red raised dot minky. And I machine quilted it in a loopy, free-motion pattern (don't look too closely, I'm still learning.) There may be more quilts in my future.

*So I've been reminded that technically this is not my first pieced quilt. I made an Irish Chain quilt out of  2 1/2" squares for my final sewing project my senior year of high school. (And a flannel quilt that probably ended up at a thrift store because I gave it to an old boyfriend back in college.)  And I made two quilts this year, I even referred to this one as my first pieced quilt. So call it too little sleep or short term memory, this is however the first quilt involving some precision that I didn't receive help making. And it is the first time I have free-motion quilted, so don't enlarge the photo.

cool! Great job Somer! What kind of machine did you use to quilt it?

Jocelyn-I used my regular sewing machine, but I lowered the feed dogs and used an embroidery/free-motion foot.

Thanks, Jayne.

You did an outstanding job, Somer. It is beautiful. Your mother will be thrilled. You need to get a picture of you and your mom holding the quilt and post it. "Yellow Brick Road" is a great quilt for a beginner. It looks really complicated but is so simple. It was my first and I have made so many of them because I love it so much. You amaze me at all the things you do in your life. You sure get a lot accomplished!
