Thump

This morning, as we were waiting for Maisy's school bus, Jack and Maisy took a tumble together. I saw a scuffle out of the corner of my eye, then I heard a thump, thump and turned to see what had happened; best I can tell Maisy was scooting along the furniture and started to lose her balance. She turned to Jack for support and he in turn lost his balance.
They both went down and she hit with the loudest thump, and that is how I found them in a pile of limbs and tears. Maisy partly blamed Jack for her fall and he was devastated that she brought him down and all I could think is that this was an encounter that would repeat itself for years to come.
When Jack was born, Maisy's therapists told me that through sibling rivalry and peer play, he would encourage Maisy's development. And we have seen that. She was not about to let him crawl before she did. She wants to keep up with Jack and she mimics a lot of his behaviors. But what about the things that she simply can't do? Walking, talking; I wonder how she feels about that.
Then there is the future, the times when her differences will isolate her. Will Jack be her protector? Will he stand up for her? I hope so. I hope he strong enough to be her support and help her stand and know she's not alone.
I hope we are able to teach him the important role that he has in life. I don't think that is a bad responsibility. I don't think it is wrong for a child to learn that it isn't just about you, there are others out there who need our help. I'm very grateful that they have each other.

I bet Jack was the perfect one chosen in his premortal role to fulfill this special responsibility to help and protect Maisy. I think every child in every family has a specific task they were sent here to fultill. We don't always know or recognize it.

I agree Cynthia, when I found out I was pregnant with Jack I was so scared. I had so much to do for Maisy, but he came into the world at just the right time. I had no way of knowing that he was so needed, by all of us.
